Community and Service

Community and Service in Ashland and Beyond
At Ashland Christian Church, our faith is lived out through service, fellowship, and care for those around us. We believe that being part of a community means extending a helping hand, sharing our blessings, and walking together in faith. From gleaning fresh produce for local food banks to providing essential items through Disciples Depot, our congregation is dedicated to making a difference. Whether it’s through mission trips, outreach programs, or simply offering a space of peace in our Memorial Garden, we strive to reflect Christ’s love in all we do.

Serving... From our doorsteps to the ends of the earth
It has been by faith that Ashland Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has reached out to the community.
Ashland Christian Church, along with other area churches, started “Meals on Wheels” and the “Ashland Christian Emergency Services” (ACES). Each Sunday of every month donations of non-perishable foods are collected to help support the ministries of ACES. ACES can also be supported through AmazonSmile.
Kiddie Kingdom was started in September 1968 as an outreach ministry of the Sunday School Department of Ashland Christian Church. Originally a half-day program, it was expanded to provide all-day care in 1969, and became the first licensed childcare facility in Hanover County. Kiddie Kingdom is now a non-profit school serving the needs of families in Hanover County.
In 2011 ACC spearheaded a project to build a much needed new home for the Miller Brothers. Other churches along with members of the community came together and over $51,000 was raised to help make this a reality.
By faith, Ashland Christian Church continues to do the work God calls us to do in the community.
During Lent, we filled coin boxes to support the Society of St. Andrew (SoSA) whose mission is “to bring people together to harvest and share healthy food, reduce food waste and build caring communities by offering nourishment to hungry neighbors. Since 1983, SoSA has salvaged fresh, nutritious produce from American farms – produce that otherwise would be wasted in the fields, transportation, supermarkets, restaurants and homes. This food is delivered to agencies across the nation that serve the poor. SoSA is based just outside Lynchburg, VA.
Through the years Ashland Christian Church has been involved in refugee re-settlement. The most recent commitment to helping our international friends has been the development of the Disciples Depot in Hunter Hall. On the first Saturday of the months September- June, from 10-11:30am, the local international community has the opportunity to pick up gently used clothing as well as some needed focus items such as diapers, toiletries, and such.
Our church has helped with a variety of programs at different Hanover County Schools as needs arise. During Covid, we filled boxes with food for struggling families. We have worked with the Liberty School PTA in organizing a Clothing Closet to provide clothes for students in need and also needed provisions for teachers. Each school year, our church helps to fill backpacks and gather school supplies for Ashland students.
Each Christmas, our church sponsors several Hanover families by providing Christmas for them with Christmas gifts, clothes and gift cards.
Our church, through our Legacy Fund, also donates money to other local organizations including ACES, ARC, Craig Springs Church Camp, Hanover Free Clinic, the YMCA Bright Beginnings program, CROP Walk, Circles of Ashland, WHEAT (Western Hanover Emergency Action Team), Habitat for Humanity, and Hanover Safe Place.
Deuteronomy 15 reminds us: “Since there will never cease to be some in need on the Earth, I therefore command you, open your hand to the poor and need neighbor in your land.”
On Wednesday, September 6th, a group of our folks joined a SoSA representative to help glean a blackberry farm. The group was able to pick 156 pints of blackberries, which were taken to a local food bank in Beaverdam and SoSA will then deliver them to the hungry people in our area. Thanks to Cathy Crews, Suz Morrison, Carroll LaHaye, Kathryn Hull, and Erica Sasser for representing our church!
